28th SOUTHERN HERITAGE CLASSIC® CULTURAL CELEBRATION

September 7-9, 2017

Memphis, Tennessee

2003 Liberty Bowl – Tennessee State 44, Jackson State 14

In the first half, turnovers set the game’s tempo as much as offense and defense.

TSU scored off of a Paul Thomas blocked punt when he tossed the ball to Ahmed Safeullah only two minutes into the game. After that, JSU fumbled and fumbled and fumbled on its next possessions.

For its part, TSU got a little offense going, but was leading only 16-6 with a few seconds remaining in the half and with JSU at the one-yard line. The tone of the night was set for JSU as the clock ran out on a golden opportunity to score.

In the third quarter, TSU put the game away before 52,603 fans.. Tailback Charles Anthony scored from 16 and 36 yards out, ending his night with 110 yards.

JSU quarterback Robert Kent attempted 48 passes and completed enough to move past the 10,000-yard mark for his career. But he was playing a catch-up game all through the second half.

Special teams took the encore on this Classic when TSU’s Jarrett Morrow returned a punt for a 67-yard touchdown with less than a minute in the game.
